Norway is not known for friendly weather. Therefore, the choice of suitable clothing is even more important. However, one is quickly tempted to pack too much warm and bulky stuff. What do you really need on a truhike?
My following experiences may be useful for planning of outdoor adventures in comparable latitudes. However, you should always be aware that especially the cold and heat perception is very individual. In addition, it also plays a role how an average hiking day looks like. Am I constantly on the move? Do I take longer breaks outside even in bad weather? How often am I effectively confronted with a weather situation and what would be the alternatives?
In retrospect, I can say that my clothing concept has been a complete success. Apart from an additional hat, I had all pieces of clothing in use. I never had the feeling of missing something. The weather was mostly on the cool and humid side, but there were also several days with plenty of sun and relatively warm temperatures. In practice I was wearing less than one may think initially.
I wore my basic clothing most days and supplemented it when it was windy or cold, or reduced it when it got warmer. The temperatures in the table below are indicative. With wind the range shifts one column to the left (colder) and the range shifts to the right (warmer) with sunshine.
I enjoyed some pieces marked with a * in the table below in and around the tent or while resting.
